Healthy food doesn’t have to break the bank.

Families on a tight budget report that the cost of healthy groceries is their biggest barrier to making healthy meals at home. Food skills, like smart shopping, can help overcome that barrier. Cooking Matters at the Store (CMATS) is a free program that works with families to stretch their food budgets to make healthy meals at home. CMATS is a conversation about skills that helps adult learners get the most nutrition for their food dollars.

The program covers four key food selection skills:

  1. Reading food labels
  2. Comparing unit prices
  3. Finding whole grain foods
  4. Identifying three ways to purchase produce
